As of January 1, 2024, prescriptions for controlled substances must be done electronically with few exceptions.

Prepare to utilize e-prescribing
- If you already have an EHR:
- Check with your EHR vendor to see if you can add e-Rx
- If yes:
- Confirm it includes EPCS for controlled substances (not all e-prescribing systems include EPCS)
- Confirm it includes all state-specific requirements
- If no:
- You will need stand-alone e-prescribing application
- If you do not have an EHR (or cannot prescribe through your EHR):

- Tips
- Do not destroy your paper prescription forms – may need for:
- e-prescribing not available due to temporary technical or electrical failure
- Out-of-state pharmacy
- Do not rely solely on the medication history in the e-prescribing system
- They typically only include prescriptions for which patient has used their insurance
- Continue to check the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP)
- It includes prescriptions paid for by cash
- State law may require that prescribers check it
- States monitor access to the PMP
- Technology innovations can lead to patient safety issues
- Data must be entered correctly
