Update on the PRMS Partners in the Community Grant to the Jackson Free Clinic

As part of PRMS’ ongoing commitment to behavioral health, we invited Mississippi Psychiatric Association member, Dr. Jody Morgan, who serves as University of Mississippi Medical Center Chief Operations Officer, Specialty Services, and Jackson Free Clinic Executive Board Chair in Jackson, to be featured as a guest blogger this month. Dr. Morgan reflects on the impact the PRMS Partners in the Community Grant made to the Jackson Free Clinic in Jackson, MS.

Mississippi Psychiatric Association Nominates Jackson Free Clinic for PRMS Grant

In 2024, the Mississippi Psychiatric Association (MPA) nominated the Psychiatry Outreach Program (POP) at the Jackson Free Clinic (JFC) for the PRMS Partners in the Community Grant (PPCG). Offered exclusively to partners of PRMS, the PPCG gives partners the opportunity to nominate local non-profit organizations for a chance to receive funding to develop further programming, member volunteer opportunities, and strengthen existing collaborative efforts with the nominating partner. This contribution reflects the enduring partnership between MPA, many of their Resident and Early Career Psychiatrists, and the dedicated mental health team at JFC, all working together to improve access to psychiatric care for Mississippi’s uninsured population.

Jackson Free Clinic Enhances Psychiatric Care for Uninsured Patients

The Jackson Free Clinic is a student-led, student-operated 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides comprehensive healthcare services—including medical, dental, psychiatry, rehabilitation, pharmacy, social health, and specialty care—to individuals without insurance. The clinic’s Psychiatry Outreach Program operates twice a month, with volunteer psychiatrists offering their time to treat patients and mentor future healthcare providers.

Thanks to this $2,000 donation, the clinic has been able to stock essential psychiatric medications and maintain its pharmacy’s formulary, ensuring patients have access to the medications they need. The JFC Pharmacy, a closed-door facility, provides all medications at no cost to JFC patients. With this support, the Psychiatry Outreach Program is better equipped to offer consistent, reliable mental health services, ensuring patients receive both care and medications entirely free of charge.

We are extremely grateful and humbled by this monetary support that will help us serve a large number of psychiatric patients through the POP. To donate to further POP efforts at the Jackson Free Clinic, visit: https://givebutter.com/JFC2425.
