Advancing Mental Health Support for Marginalized Communities
Annelle Primm, MD, MPH, DLFAPA is a Baltimore-based community psychiatrist and the Senior Medical Director of the Steve Fund, a national non-profit organization focused on the mental health of young people of color including college students in the transition from adolescence to early adulthood.
Dr. Primm is also co-founder, chair, and convener of All Healers Mental Health Alliance, a group of mental health professionals, faith leaders, first responders, and public health advocates that mobilizes organizational collaborations to facilitate culturally aligned responses to the mental health needs of natural and human-caused disaster-affected marginalized communities nationwide.
Dr. Annelle Primm's Academic and Professional Background in Psychiatry
Previously serving as Deputy Medical Director and Director of the Office of Minority and National Affairs of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and Director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Community Psychiatry Program, Dr. Primm received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University, her medical degree from Howard University, and psychiatric training, as well as a master's degree in public health, from Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Annelle Primm's Contributions to Psychiatry Literature and Education
She is the co-author of numerous peer-reviewed articles and co-editor of books including Women in Psychiatry: Personal Perspectives, and most recently published in 2024, Mental Health, Racism, and Contemporary Challenges of Being Black in America. Throughout her career, Dr. Primm has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Alexandra Symonds Award from the American Psychiatric Association Foundation.
Dr. Primm currently serves as an adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University, New York University, and Howard University Schools of Medicine. She is also a member of the American College of Psychiatrists and the Black Psychiatrists of America Council of Elders.
The Harold E. Berson, MD Award: Honoring Excellence in Psychiatry
The Harold E. Berson, MD Award is presented annually and acknowledges a senior member who has made a significant contribution to psychiatry. The award is made possible by a grant from the estate of Harold E. Berson, MD. The presentation ceremony took place at the Senior Psychiatrists Annual Reception on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, in New York City.
