Guest Blog: LPMA MPA Annual Meeting 2019 in New Orleans
As a part of PRMS’ ongoing commitment to behavioral health, we invited Doctor Frank Perkins, PGY-3 Psychiatry Resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center Department of Psychiatry to be featured as our guest blogger this month.
The weekend of February 14 – 17, 2019, the Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Association and Mississippi Psychiatric Association had their combined Annual Meeting in New Orleans at the ACE Hotel. The meeting was primarily focused on the changing landscape of prescribing and recommending controlled substances in these states.
As Louisiana recently passed a medical marijuana law, the conference had significant time devoted to the risk management of cannabis prescribing, how to identify patients that may potentially benefit from cannabis and cannabis derived products, and the associated risks and benefits to be aware of. Dr. Steven Wright, MD from Colorado provided his perspective of how the legalization of cannabis has affected the medical landscape in his state and a literature review of the current evidence for medical cannabis usage. Dr. Michael Lewis, MD from Maryland discussed the usage of Hemp-derived Cannabinoids and their benefits from his clinical practice.
Jennifer Creedon, MD of Louisiana provided a day long Buprenorphine and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Training to educate providers on how to treat substance use disorders from an evidence based medicine approach. This training completed the necessary hours to apply for the MAT waiver from the DEA.
David Cash, JD, LLM and Justin Pope, JD, risk management specialists from PRMS, discussed Hot Topics in Risk Management. Their talks specifically focused on the prescribing of opiates, recommending marijuana, practicing forensic psychiatry, and issues in child and adolescent psychiatry. There were other breakout sessions discussing forensic psychiatry, medical management in psychiatric practice, substance use, child and adolescent psychiatry, telepsychiatry, women’s health, and physician well-being.
I appreciate the travel stipend from PRMS to attend this meeting. I was able to participate in one of the presentations discussing forensic practice for clinical psychiatrists. I am bringing back new risk assessments for patients on both opioid and benzodiazepine therapy and a refresher of the necessary medical monitoring for patients on certain psychiatric medications.
David Cash, JD, LLM, PRMS Assistant Vice President Risk Management with Dr. Frank Perkins.
